Brazilian food represents a variety of traditional recipes that were influenced by many cultures from its history. When the Portuguese had arrived in the 1500s, Indians had already inhabited the land and developed many foods. These foods included sweet potatoes, cassava meal, corn porridge, hearts of palm, roots, species of fish, and the preservation of meats by smoking and drying. However, the West Africans would bring the greatest influence to the Brazilian food culture. When the slaves were brought from West Africa to work in the sugar cane plantations, they would bring their cooking spices as well
